Introduction to Stone Lithography with Paul Sharrock

Developed in the 18th century and most widely known through the famous Moulin Rouge posters at the turn of the 20th century, fine art stone lithography has long been  a medium favoured by artists who embrace the way in which they can draw directly onto the printing surface, in this case stone, adopting a wide range of drawing and mark-making techniques which would be extremely difficult to achieve in most other print mediums.

Lithography is probably the printing process that allows the most direct input from the artist and can generate a wide range of textures, tones and lines but it is the immediacy of the drawing that is often so attractive to this form of printmaking.

This introductory course would benefit all levels of artists from those starting out to try lithography to those wishing to refresh their skills. The two-day course provides an understanding of preparing the stone surface; ways of drawing and mark-making, use of gum stencils; chemically preparing the stone to print; registration of paper and setting up the press and printing a small edition. Whilst a self-contained course, the aim is to encourage further personal experimentation based on the foundation of this course.
